Right? Really how can you really do that. None of us truly knows when something may go wrong. While it is impossible and impractical sometimes to plan for every possibility, the basis should be easy enough to put into place.
Living in Florida, we don’t give much thought to Winter as causing unexpected events, but probably should. This past week has left record temperatures, snow fall, and power outages in the most unlikely of places here in Florida.
Many of us rely on electricity and HVAC systems as our main source of heat, but with the freezing rains that came down many homes were left without a heat source simply because the HVAC was frozen over. Others were simply left without power due to falling ice and limbs breaking the power lines.
These are not SHTF events, but in Winter it can leave your ass freezing, indoors.
So what plans can you make?
Here are 4 actions that we took, because even though we didn’t lose power our home was still cold.
- Dress in layers. This may seem obvious but, I can tell you that members of my own family were walking around complaining about the cold, but were dressed like it was summer. You may not need a winter coat indoors, but layering couple of t-shirts and adding sweats pants over my other clothes turned the house from cold to comfortable without adjusting the thermostat.
- Fleece or Flannel sheets and blankets. A few years ago we made a light fleece blanket the layer between us and the top sheet, it holds the heat in really well.
- Close off the room you’re sleeping in (if possible). We have cats that prefer to roam the house, but even closing the bedroom door partially helped to hold the heat in the room.
- Open the sun facing blinds as soon as the sun starts peeking through and allowing the solar gain to heat the rooms as much as possible.
I scoured around for a few other posts that I thought would be helpful, too. In the comments below let us know your suggestions for winter prepping.
