Last Updated: October 25, 2020 By Cheeky Team Member

In a situation where we fight for survival, having fire is extremely important, and choosing the right kind of firewood is the necessary skill. Yet many survivalists neglect it. Fire lets you prepare food, boil water and provides warmth. Nordic people have, through millennia, mastered the art of fire starting and maintaining. Finnish gap is a method of fire building by laying two logs on top of each other. The lower log will need some grooves, which you should fill with bark and sticks, which will start the fire.

Key Takeaways:

  • A Finnish gap fire is set up by laying two fire logs horizontally on top of each other.
  • The Finnish gap fire is very valuable if you are sleeping outdoors as they burn all night and let you stay warm during sleep.
  • The most important thing to remember when making this fire is to carve a groove into the lower log so that you can fill up the groove with small sticks and bark.

“Beyond that, fire is going to be there for you to create warmth, cook food, a signal for rescue and so much more.”
