How to Harvest Herbs from Your Garden

Last Updated: October 21, 2020 By Cheeky Team Member

Harvesting herbs may seem difficult for some, but it can be done relatively easily when you know what to do. Herbs can provide a lot of versatility to cooking and make food taste a lot more rich. It is important to know when to harvest as well as how to harvest properly by using sharp shears to cut stems, for example. Leafy herbs, perennial herbs and flower herbs all have a different way of being harvested efficiently and safely.

Key Takeaways:

  • Since you want to let your herbs dry off from the morning dew, it’s better to begin harvesting them during the later morning hours.
  • To ensure regrowth and more herb to follow, pinch of a leaf that is above a leaf pair. This advice applies to leafy herbs.
  • A good example of a perennial herb is thyme. With these herbs it’s wise to cut the stems and leave some bottommost inches of the plant to ensure regrowth.

“It’s also important to harvest before the hot sun starts bearing down on the plant, too. The sun will evaporate the oils that the herb plant produces.”
