How To Tie A Square Knot | Step-By-Step Instructions

Last Updated: December 7, 2019 By Cheeky Team Member

The square knot is not the most well-known type of knot. Hearing the words “square knot” can be kind of intimidating, but rest assured, it is actually easy to execute and extremely useful! Square knots can be used for first aid, securing trash bags, and used in surgery. To tie one, simply follow the basic knot-tying principles: Take one line in your right, and one in your left hand. Pass the right under the left, and then the left under the right. At this point, two loops should be on the side of one another. Tighten by pulling both strings away from the center, and voila! You have a perfect square knot.

Key Takeaways:

  • A square knot is a common knot that’s also known as a reef knot.
  • Other than in sailing, a square knot can come in handy when typing shoelaces, sashes, and trash bags.
  • A square knot is not a good option when using nylon rope, due to slippage.

“Following the instructions here on how to tie such a knot can be a lifesaver.”
