How to “Winterize” Your Pipes and Prevent Damage

How to “Winterize” Your Pipes and Prevent Damage

Last Updated: December 17, 2019 By Cheeky Team Member

The end of fall is a great time to prepare your pipes for the cold of winter. It’s very important to make sure there will be no leaks and water damage, especially if you are vacating the home for the winter. There are a few easy steps to prevent pipes bursting. First, close off the water heater, and the valve or pumps. Then, run the faucets and toilets. Remove as much water as possible. If necessary, add antifreeze. Proper protection of your pipes can prevent a mess when you return in the spring!

Key Takeaways:

  • If water left inside your pipes freezes, it causes the pipes to expand and burst.
  • If you are winterizing a home you will not be living in, drain out all the water and shut off all valves.
  • If you are living in a home that has a room that is not adequately heated, you can insulate pipes with foam sleeves.

“Actually, the warm temperatures we’re having now are the ideal time to prepare your home for the cold weather to come.”
